The Silver Streak
Recent newspaper articles including one in the Wall Street Journal reference the rise in allure and popularity for silver jewelry. An example is Bottega Venta’s 2022 debut of bulbous silver-drop earrings which have been duplicated many times over since their introduction. And today the fashion forward set are craving similar looks.
The combination of the rising price of gold and trending oversized design have transformed this metal into a luxurious option. Today silver is looked upon as cooler, sharper and more fashion-forward.
Chunky, sculptural styles are driving demand. Styles like Tiffany & Co.’s iconic Elsa Peretti bone cuff (designed in 1970 and inspired by Peretti’s love of Antoni Gaudí’s architecture) continues as a top seller. On the Tiffany & Co. website, the small version of the cuff retails for $1,800 in silver and in 18-karat gold retails for $21,000.
There is a new attitude that sterling silver can be a forever piece that you pass down – just the way that gold has been thought of for years.
There is a new perspective about how precious metals look on the skin. It is considered that gold can add warmth, but it can also skew yellow. Which doesn’t look great on everyone, especially with age. As we get older, our hair and skin lighten and that is why icy tones of silver are more complimentary.
Less costly than gold, silver allows women to play and experiment with bold designs. Designs which are chic yet not overpowering – silver brings an allure of its own
Argent does have drawbacks. Maintaining silver’s luster can be difficult but wearing silver pieces everyday will slow tarnishing. Gold will also patina and tarnish, but it’s not noticeable.
You can store your silver pieces in inexpensive anti-tarnishing cloths. When polishing, apply silver polish gently with a soft toothbrush and rinse with lukewarm water. (In a pinch, a nonabrasive toothpaste will also do the job.)
Today many silver designers are plating their pieces with rhodium, a rare, silvery-white metal which will allow your silver collection to be tarnish free for years. Stock up and be ready to offer your customer style, and luxury allowing them to diversify to their fine jewelry wardrobe.
