GREAT EXPECTATIONS

3 Shifts Shaping Your Holiday Shopper
Jennifer Shaheen
The shopping season brings natural expectations for customers, and what we need to be prepared for this year as independent retail jewelry stores is that your customers will be shopping with more intention than in years past.
Mintel’s 2026 winter holiday outlook describes this shopper as high-intent and high-expectation, someone committed to buying but who wants value, convenience, personalization, and emotional reassurance before making a purchase. That is a demanding customer. It is also exactly the customer an independent jeweler is built to serve.
Here are the three shifts in buyer psychology that are shaping how shoppers research, decide, and spend this season.

1. The Research Starts Long Before the Season Does
The impulse buy still exists, but it is no longer the primary focus of spending. Nowadays, holiday shoppers plan ahead. Data from Basis and GWI shows that 71% of consumers used at least one digital resource—such as search, social media, or AI—to find gift ideas last season. Salesforce forecasts that 38% of holiday retail revenue this year will come from hybrid sales, where digital research, AI tools, or mobile browsing directly influence instore purchases.
Pay special attention to this number: nearly 4 in 10 holiday dollars go through a digital research phase before landing in a store. That is your sale to win, and most of it gets decided before anyone touches your door handle.
Action: Publish your holiday gift guide in October, not December. Make sure your product pages include real details: price, materials, sizing, availability, turnaround time for custom work, and FAQs. Make product review requests a standing part of your post-purchase routine, along with local Google reviews, because a shopper comparing three stores needs proof that does not come from you.

Use the automation you’re already paying for. If you’re already using an email platform like Klaviyo or Mailchimp it can handle the invitation and reminder sequences. Set the reply-to address and assign someone on your team to manage replies. Other platforms like Trumpia, Podium, and Clientbook can send personalized mass texts from members of your team and route replies to sales associates based on client. Using the platforms you already have is a great way to do outreach, but your team will still need to handle replies and follow up.
Hire out the conversation itself. The replies are where the hours go, and where automation runs out. Some jewelers staff this with seasonal or part-time help trained on a script. Others use a done-for-you service. Concierge by Clientbook works this way: the store sends its client list, and Clientbook’s team runs the invitations and reminders, handles the back and forth as clients reply, and books the appointments on the store’s behalf. Jewelry marketing agencies including Punchmark, Fruchtman Marketing, and Loudr offer their own versions of this under retainer. The tradeoff is cost against the fact that these conversations are the only part of prep that produces a booked appointment.
Whichever combination you land on, the goal is the same. Protect your associates’ hours for the one thing only they can do, which is sell.
Great expectations only pay off if you prepare for them. Decide now what “better than last year” means, build the event around that number, and take everything off your team’s plate that doesn’t need to be there. Do that, and December becomes execution instead of a scramble. That is how you beat last year.
