IMPORTANT AGTA Statement on U.S. - India Trade Agreement

The American Gem Trade Association applauds President Trump’s announcement of reaching a historic trade agreement with the Government of India. AGTA has worked tirelessly in advocating a reduction or elimination of tariffs on key gem source countries, including India. We are awaiting more details, but are pleased that the agreement reduces U.S. tariffs on Indian imports to 18%.

AGTA CEO John Ford, and President, Bruce Bridges, stated:

“While this outcome is welcome news for the trade, it reflects months of sustained advocacy led by the American Gem Trade Association, whose early and ongoing engagement with policymakers helped ensure gemstones were properly understood and prioritized in the tariff discussions. AGTA wholeheartedly thanks the many Members of the House of Representatives and Senate that have written letters on behalf of AGTA regarding the Indian Trade Agreement.”

Because gemstones imported by AGTA are not geologically available in the United States, they have historically been accorded duty-free entry. AGTA will continue to seek a return to this status to maintain the continued viability of our small businesses and existing supply chains.

We also note that President Trump’s September 2025 Executive Order establishing Potential Tariff Adjustments for Aligned Partners, or PTAAP, allows a reduction in tariffs for certain listed unavailable natural resources, including gemstones, upon the conclusion of reciprocal trade agreements.”

Accordingly, AGTA urges the Administration to conclude final trade and security agreements with our trade partners to activate this provision.
